A useful paper-bag brief starts with the contents, not the logo. A bag for a boxed fragrance, folded clothing or several books needs different dimensions and handling checks. Define what goes inside, how customers will carry it and the conditions it will meet before choosing the paper or finish. This guide helps you prepare the inputs for custom paper bag printing.
Measure the product before specifying the bag
Record the maximum packed width, depth and height, including any product box, tissue or insert. Label every dimension rather than sending an unexplained sequence of numbers. Confirm whether the quoted bag dimensions describe the finished exterior or usable space. The folded base, side gussets and turned-over top can affect how the contents fit.
Allow enough room for staff to pack the bag without forcing the seams, but avoid an oversized bag that lets the contents move unnecessarily. For a range of products, list the combinations that must fit together. A physical packing trial with the intended contents is more useful than approving an empty bag from a photograph.
Choose paper for strength, print and handling
Paper weight is only one part of the construction. Paper grade, fiber properties, folds, glue joints, handle attachment and reinforcement all affect the finished bag. Do not treat a higher gsm value as a guaranteed carrying capacity. Ask for a sample made to the proposed specification and agree how it should be checked with your intended load.
Mondi describes shopping-bag papers with different balances of strength, printability and surface appearance. That supports comparing the grade as well as its weight; it does not establish a load rating for your finished bag. Compare kraft paper bags for a paper-led appearance and laminated paper bags where the design brief calls for a particular surface finish.
Match the handles and reinforcement to the contents
Twisted paper, flat paper, rope and ribbon handles create different grip and presentation options. Specify handle length and attachment method, including any reinforcement at the top or handle area. Heavy or sharply edged contents also need a suitable base construction. Handle comfort should be checked with a filled bag rather than an empty display sample.
For gift paper bags, review how handles, tissue and closure details work together. Confirm that a decorative opening or ribbon does not interfere with packing. Record the approved handle color and attachment details so that later substitutions are not made on appearance alone.
Plan printing and finishing around the structure
Ask the printer to recommend a production route from the artwork, paper, quantity and finishing requirements. Keep critical copy clear of folds, glue areas and handle holes. Dark paper and uncoated kraft affect how a printed design looks; approve a relevant material sample when color or opacity is important. A screen preview cannot show the final surface feel or crease behavior.
If you request foil, embossing or a coating, mark those areas separately in the artwork and ask how they interact with folds. Do not describe a finished bag as recyclable or certified solely because its base paper has a particular attribute. Confirm the complete construction, requested documentation and intended disposal system before making a claim.
Approve the bag as a finished object
- Pack the intended contents and check usable space, access and base stability.
- Review handles, seams and reinforcement under an agreed carrying test.
- Check print position, critical colors, folds and visible glue marks against the approved sample.
- Confirm packing quantity, protection for handles and delivery carton identification.
Ask what each proof represents: a structural mockup, a print proof and a production sample answer different questions. Use the quality-control process to agree acceptance checks before release rather than deciding them after delivery.
Paper bag ordering FAQ
Can I choose paper by gsm alone?
No. Provide the contents, load and use conditions so the paper, joints, handles and reinforcement can be considered together. Confirm suitability on the proposed finished construction.
Does lamination make a bag waterproof?
Do not assume it does. Exposed edges, folds and joints still matter. Describe the moisture exposure and request a relevant sample check instead of relying on the finish name.
What should a comparable quote include?
Send labeled dimensions, contents and load, quantity by design, paper preference, printing, finish, handle construction, sample requirements, packing, destination and required date. Ask alternative quotes to use the same specification.
Prepare your paper bag quote
Start with the paper bag product range, then send your brief for a quote. Include a product photo or packed sample dimensions and identify any details that are not yet decided.
