The product in use

A wrapped flexible cover around a bound text block

A flexibound edition joins a bound text block to a flexible, material-wrapped cover, usually through endpapers. It has a different bend and hand feel from a rigid case or a simple card paperback. The wrap, inner support and hinge work together to define the finished cover behavior.

What makes up the finished product?

Cover structure
Flexibound describes a flexible case; it is distinct from a stiff board case and a plain paper cover.
Uncoated reading paper
A low-glare surface suits sustained reading. Shade changes the contrast of text and the appearance of inserted photographs.
Cover and additions
Synthetic cover materials, cloth and printed wraps each need their own bend and attachment checks.

Uncoated reading paper

Woodfree white or cream book paper

A low-glare surface suits sustained reading. Shade changes the contrast of text and the appearance of inserted photographs.

Sample check: Compare reverse-side show-through at the final type size.

Coated illustration section

115 or 150 g/m² supplier reference grades

A separate coated section gives photographs a different surface without changing every text page.

Sample check: Identify the insertion point and additional thickness in the pagination plan.

Surface finish options

Printed covers and jackets

Choose the finish for the printed cover or jacket, not automatically for the interior. Check color, rub marks, hinges and compatibility with the cover stock. Cloth and synthetic wraps need a separate material trial.

Details that change the finished product

Inspect the paper, print and bound opening

Combine a flexible cover with a bound page block

Specify the actual flexible cover build and text-block attachment. The term flexibound does not by itself define board thickness, cover overhang or opening behavior.

Portable References & Flexible Gift Editions

Portable reference

A flexible case can soften hand-held use; assess the cover and page block as one assembly.

Gift reading edition

Specify cover material and markers without assuming the structure behaves like a rigid case.

Solve the risk before production

Check Cover Curl, Creasing & Bend Recovery

The critical finished-product check

A flexible cover can curl or crease if the covering material and core are mismatched. Bend the proposed cover sample and assess its recovery before approving the full construction.

Cover graphics distort at the hinge

Why it happens: Artwork is positioned without accounting for the flexible wrap and attached endpapers.

Fix and check: Use the construction-specific cover template and inspect its bend and hinge in a bound sample.

Sample and approval

Evaluate the Wrapped Flexible Cover & Bound Block

Free samples are available, with preparation completed within 15 days. Confirm the sample scope; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.

Structural sample

Checks dimensions, fit and assembly using unprinted or representative materials. It does not establish final color.

Printed proof

Checks text, image reproduction and artwork on the agreed proof medium. It may not reproduce final assembly or every finish.

Complete finished sample

A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections.

From brief to delivery

Order Details for Flexibound Book Printing

Build and approve the order in five steps

  1. Send the project brief

Send cover build, flexibility reference, overhang preference and finished text-block thickness. Include finished dimensions, quantity by version, destination and required arrival date. If a configuration is undecided, describe the intended use.

  2. Compare the quoted configuration

Compare the same quantity basis: complete books per language, artwork version and binding. Check that the quote identifies materials, finishing, included components, sample scope, packing and freight.

  3. Approve the appropriate sample

A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections. A print proof checks artwork and color; a complete finished sample also checks assembly. Record what the selected sample does and does not reproduce.

  4. Confirm files and release production

Approve the final artwork revision and the cover structure specification. Record the agreed quantity, payment conditions, packing and production schedule in the order.

  5. Confirm packing and dispatch

State books per carton, edition labels and any slipcases or individual wrapping. Confirm production completion and transit as separate dates, using the delivery destination and required arrival date.

File preparation

Artwork checklist for Flexibound Book Printing

Artwork and production workflow
  • Supply the complete reading-order interior PDF, including intentional blank pages. Supply a separate cover file built from the approved spine, hinge or punched-edge template. Case-wrap turn-ins, hinge areas and binding clearance are separate from trim bleed; keep essential content outside all of them. Supply finish masks as named separations.
  • Extend edge-to-edge trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies a different bleed. Use approximately 300 effective ppi for continuous-tone images at their placed size; keep fine linework as vectors where possible.

Project questions

Planning Flexibound Book Printing

Can a flexibound cover use a hardcover template?

Use the template for the confirmed flexible-case construction. The spine, hinge, turn-ins and attachment depend on the selected materials and page block. A rigid-case template should not be reused without checking those dimensions.

How should I specify quantities and versions?

Count complete books per language, artwork version and binding. State cover build, flexibility reference, overhang preference and finished text-block thickness; components, language versions and different structures must be listed separately.

What determines the minimum quantity and delivery schedule?

The selected stock, construction, finishing, version count and sample scope determine production planning. Request quantity breaks for the same configuration and an arrival-date plan that separates sampling, manufacturing and transit. No minimum or lead time is implied by the design examples above.
