The product in use
Twin-loop metal binding for open-desk use
Wire-O joins punched leaves with paired metal loops. The finished book can open at a desk and fold its pages back, making the structure useful for working references and tabbed pages. Hole pitch, closed loop size and the complete block thickness determine how smoothly the pages turn.

What makes up the finished product?
- Wire assembly
- Covers and dividers add to the stack that must turn freely inside the closed wire.
- Uncoated working pages
- A receptive surface helps pencil and pen use. Erasing, ink drying and show-through depend on the selected paper and writing instrument.
- Cover and additions
- Wire-O uses twin loops; a continuous spiral coil is a different binding with a different punching pattern.
Specifications and materials
Wire-O Bound Book Printing specifications
Use these reference options to build the project brief. Dimensions are design examples; material availability, tooling and production timing depend on the confirmed specification.
| Parameter | Reference or option | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | 210 × 297 mm | An A4 design example works for a desk manual; the punched edge consumes part of the page width. Design reference, not a factory limit. |
| Wire assembly | Twin-loop metal wire; selected pitch, diameter and punched edge | Covers and dividers add to the stack that must turn freely inside the closed wire. |
| Interior page count | Final reading-order PDF, including intentional blanks; covers stated separately | Page count, actual paper caliper and binding determine the page block and cover spine. |
| Binding and cover | Punched loose leaves closed with twin-loop metal wire; optional tabs and covers | A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections. |
| Material construction | Uncoated working pages or Coated image pages | Compare the actual grade and construction. Write and erase on the finished sample, including pages near the bound edge. |
| Format and order unit | complete books per language, artwork version and binding | List components and versions separately so quantities refer to the same finished unit. |
| Finishing choice | Wire-O uses twin loops; a continuous spiral coil is a different binding with a different punching pattern. | Approve the proposed material and process combination on an appropriate sample. |
| Wire pitch reference | 3:1 or 2:1 hole pitch, matched to the binding system | Pitch is the number of holes per inch. Wire size, punched pattern and actual block thickness must match; the supplier system reference is not a Lemon machine specification. |

Choose the surface and construction for the way the finished product will be used. The options below are selection references, not a guaranteed inventory list.
Uncoated working pages
Woodfree paper with a tested writing surface
A receptive surface helps pencil and pen use. Erasing, ink drying and show-through depend on the selected paper and writing instrument.
Sample check: Write and erase on the finished sample, including pages near the bound edge.
Coated image pages
115 or 150 g/m² supplier reference grades
A smooth image surface suits diagrams and photography. Coating is not automatically compatible with handwriting.
Sample check: Separate writing areas from sealed surfaces; test the actual pen if notes are part of the use.
Selected sample focus — Uncoated working pages: Write and erase on the finished sample, including pages near the bound edge.

Details that change the finished product
Inspect the paper, print and bound opening
Size twin-loop wire around the complete thickness
Size the wire around the measured assembled block, including dividers and covers. Use the agreed punching template rather than estimating holes from a photograph.
Wire assembly
Covers and dividers add to the stack that must turn freely inside the closed wire. A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections.
Surface and finishing compatibility
Wire-O uses twin loops; a continuous spiral coil is a different binding with a different punching pattern. A receptive surface helps pencil and pen use. Erasing, ink drying and show-through depend on the selected paper and writing instrument. Write and erase on the finished sample, including pages near the bound edge.
Wire-O Desk References & Tabbed Workbooks
Desk reference
A flat opening and turning pages suit repeated consultation; leave clear space at punched holes.
Tabbed workbook
Include covers and dividers in the assembled thickness before selecting the wire diameter.
Solve the risk before production
Check Wire Closure & Free Page Turning
The critical finished-product check
Pages can snag if loops are unevenly closed or the cover interferes with turning. Check closure and page turning across the full block on a finished sample.
The wire does not match the holes
Why it happens: Pitch or loop size is chosen independently from the punch pattern and block thickness.
Fix and check: Match pitch, wire diameter and punched edge as one system; check opening with all tabs and covers.
When to choose another format
Wire-O, Continuous Coil & Bound Manuals
| Alternative | Use and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Spiral-Bound Book Printing | A continuous coil has a different hole pattern and closing method from twin-loop metal wire. |
| Manual Printing | An adhesive or sewn manual offers a shelf spine, with a different open-page behavior. |
Sample and approval
Test Covers, Dividers & Pages in the Closed Wire
Free samples are available, with preparation completed within 15 days. Confirm the sample scope; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Structural sample
Checks dimensions, fit and assembly using unprinted or representative materials. It does not establish final color.
Printed proof
Checks text, image reproduction and artwork on the agreed proof medium. It may not reproduce final assembly or every finish.
Complete finished sample
A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections.
From brief to delivery
Order Details for Wire-O Bound Book Printing
Build and approve the order in five steps
Send the project brief
Send binding edge, block thickness, divider count and whether pages must fold through 360 degrees. Include finished dimensions, quantity by version, destination and required arrival date. If a configuration is undecided, describe the intended use.
Compare the quoted configuration
Compare the same quantity basis: complete books per language, artwork version and binding. Check that the quote identifies materials, finishing, included components, sample scope, packing and freight.
Approve the appropriate sample
A bound sample checks page turning, the gutter, the spine and any inserted sections. A print proof checks artwork and color; a complete finished sample also checks assembly. Record what the selected sample does and does not reproduce.
Confirm files and release production
Approve the final artwork revision and the wire assembly specification. Record the agreed quantity, payment conditions, packing and production schedule in the order.
Confirm packing and dispatch
State books per carton, edition labels and any slipcases or individual wrapping. Confirm production completion and transit as separate dates, using the delivery destination and required arrival date.
- Supply the complete reading-order interior PDF, including intentional blank pages. Supply a separate cover file built from the approved spine, hinge or punched-edge template. Case-wrap turn-ins, hinge areas and binding clearance are separate from trim bleed; keep essential content outside all of them. Supply finish masks as named separations.
- Extend edge-to-edge trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies a different bleed. Use approximately 300 effective ppi for continuous-tone images at their placed size; keep fine linework as vectors where possible.
Project questions
Planning Wire-O Bound Book Printing
Is Wire-O the same as spiral binding?
No. Wire-O uses paired metal loops that are closed around the punched stack; a spiral uses one continuous coil. Specify the structure explicitly because punching, diameter selection and the finished appearance differ.
How should I specify quantities and versions?
Count complete books per language, artwork version and binding. State binding edge, block thickness, divider count and whether pages must fold through 360 degrees; components, language versions and different structures must be listed separately.
What determines the minimum quantity and delivery schedule?
The selected stock, construction, finishing, version count and sample scope determine production planning. Request quantity breaks for the same configuration and an arrival-date plan that separates sampling, manufacturing and transit. No minimum or lead time is implied by the design examples above.
