Product overview

Four panels with a clear center opening.

A single center crease creates four printed panels. The uninterrupted inside spread is useful for diagrams; the fold still interrupts fine rules or faces placed directly on it.

01

Simple reveal

One fold separates the cover from an inside spread without a nested tuck panel.

02

Connected inside spread

The opening creates a broad space for diagrams, imagery or related messages.

03

Compact closed format

The folded dimensions set the handout size while the flat sheet defines the design area.

Specifications & materials

Set the Closed Size and Four-Panel Layout

Start with flat width × height and closed width × height in mm. Then compare the material and construction choices below.

Use these options to prepare your specification. Material grades, weights, thicknesses and feasible dimensions are confirmed for the quoted construction. A paper weight is not a finished thickness or a strength rating.

Surface finish options

Printed sheet surfaces

Choose the sheen around viewing light and folding. A coating and a bonded film are different routes; confirm fold behavior, color and any writing area on the finished stock rather than assuming every sheet needs lamination.

01 / SELECTION CHECK

Align content with the center fold

Set the closed dimensions and flat sheet together. Treat the center as a crease, keeping essential type and fine image detail outside its safety area. Check orientation on both sides.

02 / SELECTION CHECK

Score for the proposed material

Evaluate the selected stock, grain and any coating or film at the fold. Inspect the converted piece for cracking and closure; increased weight alone does not produce a better folded result.

Fold and panel engineering

Plan the flat sheet, center fold and reading order as one layout

A bi-fold brochure uses one central fold to create four reading panels. Its finished width is approximately half the flat width; confirm the fold direction, content sequence and safe area around the crease before artwork is released.

Compare dimensions and usable space

Published reference formats with their selection notes.

Select the material by its finished behavior

For a folding sheet, compare coated 115 or 170 g/m² reference grades with an uncoated writing surface. A heavier sheet may need scoring and can change closing behavior. GSM measures mass per area, not caliper or foldability.

Production checks that prevent avoidable rework

Distinguish flat size from finished size

State both dimensions in the quote brief. The closed size describes handling and distribution; the open size determines the sheet and the room available for the inside spread.

Keep critical content off the fold

Avoid placing small type, faces, product edges or rules directly across the center crease. Use the approved layout template and allow for the selected stock's fold behavior.

Check grain and crease on the chosen stock

Paper grain and coating affect folding behavior. Review a folded sample on the specified stock; where the surface risks cracking, discuss scoring and fold orientation before production.

Use-case selection

Choose a configuration for the job it has to do

Compact sales handout

Use the cover to identify the offer and the inside spread for a clear comparison or product story.

Trade-off: The four-panel format limits detail; move specifications to a linked page or separate sheet.

Event or venue information

Keep opening instructions and essential details visible on the first open spread; put secondary references on the reverse.

Trade-off: A highly coated surface may be less convenient for handwritten notes.

Mail or counter distribution

Choose a closed size that fits the envelope, rack or counter space, then verify thickness and fold closure with a dummy.

Trade-off: A heavier stock feels more substantial but may affect postage and pack-out.

Problem → cause → solution

Resolve the failure points before production

The fold shows a pale cracked line

Why it happens: Coating and ink are stretched around a sharp fold; unsuitable grain or an unmatched crease increases stress.

How to prevent it: Make a converted sample on the intended stock and finish. Inspect the dark areas along each crease and adjust grain direction or scoring before releasing the layout.

The reverse reads in the wrong order

Why it happens: Outside and inside artwork were prepared without a folded panel map.

How to prevent it: Number the panels on a paper mockup, mark the front and reverse, and proof the fully folded piece.

Sampling & production

Choose a Sample That Answers Your Main Concern

A structural sample, a print proof and a finished sample answer different questions. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free samples are prepared within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.

Structure and material sample

Review paper and fold with the proposed dimensions and component count. Agree whether the sample uses production materials or substitutes. An unprinted construction sample does not approve printed color.

Print and artwork proof

Review representative artwork at finished size on the agreed proof condition. Check fine detail and important colors. A screen proof cannot establish physical feel or the performance of the finished assembly.

Complete finished sample

Assess front-to-back orientation, center-fold position and inside-spread alignment with the specified components and finishing present. Record the approved revision and any differences to resolve before production.

How to Order Bi-Fold Brochure

  1. Send your project brief

Send flat width × height and closed width × height in mm. Specify four panels; print on one or both faces of the sheet. State the number of finished folded brochures per design and language, delivery destination and required arrival date. Tell us which options are undecided.

  2. Compare the quotation

Ask for pricing by finished folded brochures per design and language. Compare the same configuration at each quantity. The quotation should identify materials, finishing, sample scope, packing and freight, plus payment and order terms.

  3. Review the right sample

Choose a sample that can demonstrate front-to-back orientation, center-fold position and inside-spread alignment. Confirm what the free sample includes and any differences from the intended production specification. Preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.

  4. Approve the production version

Confirm the specification, file revision and sample decisions in writing. Production scheduling follows the agreed approvals and order release conditions; changes may require a revised quote or schedule.

  5. Confirm packing and delivery

Keep finished pieces folded squarely without excessive crease pressure. Bundle by version and protect the exposed cover faces against scuffing. Agree the destination and shipping arrangement, with production, dispatch and transit dates listed separately.

Artwork essentials

Prepare Files for the Confirmed Bi-Fold Brochure Format

Review artwork guidelines
  1. 01

Prepare outside and inside faces on the approved four-panel layout. Mark the center fold separately and keep orientation, bleed and crease safety consistent.

  2. 02

Use the PDF/X export preset and output condition confirmed with prepress. Embed fonts and identify the approved file revision.

  3. 03

Check continuous-tone images at about 300 effective pixels per inch (ppi) at their final placed size. Fine linework can require a different resolution or vector artwork.

  4. 04

Extend trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies otherwise. Keep structural, folding and binding clearances separate from trim bleed.

  5. 05

Identify named spot colors or physical references and the intended substrate. Agree proof acceptance and keep finishing separations distinct. A screen PDF does not approve printed color.

Engineering & purchasing FAQ

Questions Before Ordering Bi-Fold Brochure

How many panels does a bi-fold have?

One fold creates two panels on each face, four in total. The inside opens as a paired spread. Identify outside and inside in the file so the cover and back panel are not reversed.

Can a photograph span the inside?

It can, with the crease kept in mind. Place critical detail away from the fold and inspect the actual stock and finish after conversion, particularly for large dark or solid-color areas.

Which sample should I request first?

Start with the uncertainty that could change the specification: front-to-back orientation, center-fold position and inside-spread alignment. If the concern is physical, request the relevant material or functional sample. If it is print appearance, agree a suitable proof. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free sample preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.

How should I state quantities for a quote?

Use finished folded brochures per design and language. Separate versions and give a delivery destination and required arrival date. This lets the quote distinguish the production quantity, packing and shipping scope.
