Product overview
An accordion reveal across equal panels.
Alternating folds let the brochure open as a continuous strip. Equal nominal panels make a connected timeline easier to lay out, but map labels must remain clear of both creases.

Alternating folds
The sheet folds in opposite directions to make an accordion rather than a tucked roll fold.
Progressive opening
Readers can reveal adjacent panels without opening the entire sheet at once.
Connected diagrams
Maps, timelines and sequences can run across panels while individual sections remain recognizable.
Specifications & materials
Plan the Accordion Panels and Open Sheet
Start with flat and closed width × height in mm; panel widths. Then compare the material and construction choices below.
Use these options to prepare your specification. Material grades, weights, thicknesses and feasible dimensions are confirmed for the quoted construction. A paper weight is not a finished thickness or a strength rating.
| Parameter | Options or Information to Supply | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | A4 flat sheet: 297 × 210 mm; A3 flat sheet: 420 × 297 mm | Flat-sheet references; nominal panel divisions exclude crease, tuck and closing allowances. The approved layout determines finished size. |
| Format and component count | Panel count and face orientation shown on a fold diagram | One flat sheet carries both printed faces. Identify every outside and inside panel on the folded reading map. |
| Paper | Coated printing paper: 115 / 170 / 250 g/m² supplier-reference grades; uncoated alternative for writing | Named supplier examples, not stocked grades or production limits. Choose by opacity, image detail, stiffness and converted handling. |
| Fold direction | Alternating accordion folds on the agreed panel plan | Confirm which panel becomes the front cover and how the reverse is read. |
| Surface treatment | Compatible coating or lamination where needed | Review crease appearance and avoid placing critical small text directly on a fold. |

Compare materials and construction
Choose around the intended use. These are alternatives to discuss, subject to the confirmed specification.
Coated sheet
- Suitable for
- An image-led zigzag sequence.
- Check before selection
- Check reflection, fold position and artwork continuity across the alternating creases.
Uncoated sheet
- Suitable for
- A readable sequence with a matte surface.
- Check before selection
- Check fold definition and show-through with the intended panel layout.
Surface finish options
Printed sheet surfaces
Choose the sheen around viewing light and folding. A coating and a bonded film are different routes; confirm fold behavior, color and any writing area on the finished stock rather than assuming every sheet needs lamination.

Carry the Message Across Alternating Folds
Focus the review on alternating fold direction, panel alignment and graphics crossing the creases.

01 / SELECTION CHECK
Use the accordion panel plan
Establish fold direction and dimensions on both faces. Adjacent panels do not follow a tucked roll-fold layout, even when the sheet size is identical. Verify the intended opening order with a paper dummy.
02 / SELECTION CHECK
Inspect artwork through each crease
Continuous diagrams can cross the folds, but essential labels need clearance. Check both faces after folding for alignment, cracking and unintended reversal of the reading path.
Accordion-fold panel engineering
Use a continuous panel sequence that opens into one strip
A Z-fold uses alternating fold directions so the closed panels stack like a letter Z and open into a continuous strip. Unlike a roll-fold, it does not tuck one narrower panel inside another; the artwork still needs a clear front, reverse and reading sequence.
Compare dimensions and usable space
Published reference formats with their selection notes.
A4 flat sheet · 297 × 210 mm
Three nominal 99 mm-wide panels support a compact timeline or map, with six printed faces.
Read every format’s selection note
- A4 flat sheet: 297 × 210 mm. Three nominal 99 mm-wide panels support a compact timeline or map, with six printed faces.
- A3 flat sheet: 420 × 297 mm. Three nominal 140 mm-wide panels allow a larger continuous map or process diagram.
- Panel 1: front
- Panel 2: reverse-facing fold
- Panel 3: final open panel
Select the material by its finished behavior
For a folding sheet, compare coated 115 or 170 g/m² reference grades with an uncoated writing surface. A heavier sheet may need scoring and can change closing behavior. GSM measures mass per area, not caliper or foldability.

Production checks that prevent avoidable rework
Show the fold direction on both sides
Label panels 1–3 on the flat artwork and mark the alternating folds. Check that the reverse-side panels are rotated and ordered correctly after folding.
Align content across the opened strip
Maps, timelines and process graphics can span panels, but keep key labels and fine rules away from the creases to tolerate fold movement.
Proof both closed and fully open
The closed face controls first impression; the open strip controls continuity. Review both states on a paper dummy before approving print.
Use-case selection
Choose a configuration for the job it has to do
Process or timeline
Place sequential steps across the panels so the fully open sheet reads in one direction.
Trade-off: A reader must unfold the piece to see the full sequence.
Map or route guide
Keep the main route continuous and use the closed panel for a locator or legend.
Trade-off: Do not put a critical junction or small legend directly on a fold.
Product range overview
Assign one panel to each product group and use consistent headings for fast scanning.
Trade-off: Panel-by-panel content can feel fragmented unless the visual system connects it.
Problem → cause → solution
Resolve the failure points before production
The fold shows a pale cracked line
Why it happens: Coating and ink are stretched around a sharp fold; unsuitable grain or an unmatched crease increases stress.
How to prevent it: Make a converted sample on the intended stock and finish. Inspect the dark areas along each crease and adjust grain direction or scoring before releasing the layout.
The reverse reads in the wrong order
Why it happens: Outside and inside artwork were prepared without a folded panel map.
How to prevent it: Number the panels on a paper mockup, mark the front and reverse, and proof the fully folded piece.
Alternative formats
When another construction is a better fit
| Alternative | Structural difference | Selection trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Roll-fold brochure | One panel tucks inside a wrapped cover. | A controlled reveal replaces the continuous strip; tucked-panel clearance is an extra design constraint. |
Sampling & production
Choose a Sample That Answers Your Main Concern
A structural sample, a print proof and a finished sample answer different questions. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free samples are prepared within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Structure and material sample
Review paper and fold direction with the proposed dimensions and component count. Agree whether the sample uses production materials or substitutes. An unprinted construction sample does not approve printed color.
Print and artwork proof
Review representative artwork at finished size on the agreed proof condition. Check fine detail and important colors. A screen proof cannot establish physical feel or the performance of the finished assembly.
Complete finished sample
Assess alternating fold direction, panel alignment and graphics crossing the creases with the specified components and finishing present. Record the approved revision and any differences to resolve before production.
How to Order Z-Fold Brochure
Send your project brief
Send flat and closed width × height in mm; panel widths. Specify panel count and face orientation shown on a fold diagram. State the number of folded brochures per layout and language, delivery destination and required arrival date. Tell us which options are undecided.
Compare the quotation
Ask for pricing by folded brochures per layout and language. Compare the same configuration at each quantity. The quotation should identify materials, finishing, sample scope, packing and freight, plus payment and order terms.
Review the right sample
Choose a sample that can demonstrate alternating fold direction, panel alignment and graphics crossing the creases. Confirm what the free sample includes and any differences from the intended production specification. Preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Approve the production version
Confirm the specification, file revision and sample decisions in writing. Production scheduling follows the agreed approvals and order release conditions; changes may require a revised quote or schedule.
Confirm packing and delivery
Pack accordion folds consistently and protect the outer panels. Avoid uneven pressure that distorts alternate creases and label versions separately. Agree the destination and shipping arrangement, with production, dispatch and transit dates listed separately.
Details to Confirm in the Quotation
- Order unit and price breaks
- Specify folded brochures per layout and language. Request the feasible minimum and quantity breaks for that exact configuration; a change of material, version or component count can change the price.
- Sample scope and delivery
- State whether you need a material trial, a print proof or a complete finished sample. Free samples are available, with preparation completed within 15 days. Confirm the included materials and processes; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
- Approval and schedule
- State the required arrival date and whether versions ship together or to separate destinations. The quote must distinguish sample work, production and transit; a requested date is not a confirmed schedule.
- Packing and identification
- Pack accordion folds consistently and protect the outer panels. Avoid uneven pressure that distorts alternate creases and label versions separately.
- 01
Follow the confirmed accordion template with fold directions marked. Identify both faces and keep critical labels outside crease and trim safety zones.
- 02
Use the PDF/X export preset and output condition confirmed with prepress. Embed fonts and identify the approved file revision.
- 03
Check continuous-tone images at about 300 effective pixels per inch (ppi) at their final placed size. Fine linework can require a different resolution or vector artwork.
- 04
Extend trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies otherwise. Keep structural, folding and binding clearances separate from trim bleed.
- 05
Identify named spot colors or physical references and the intended substrate. Agree proof acceptance and keep finishing separations distinct. A screen PDF does not approve printed color.
Engineering & purchasing FAQ
Questions Before Ordering Z-Fold Brochure
Is a Z-fold the same as a tri-fold roll fold?
Both can have six panels, but their closing geometry differs. A Z-fold alternates directions rather than tucking one panel inside another. That changes the template and the way readers reveal information.
Can a map extend across the panels?
Yes, provided fold positions are considered in the design. Keep essential labels clear of the crease, check continuity on both faces and review a folded sample at the final size.
Can a tri-fold artwork file be reused unchanged?
Not safely without reviewing the panel plan. A roll-fold has a tucked panel and a different opening order; remap the cover and inner content to the approved Z-fold template.
Which sample should I request first?
Start with the uncertainty that could change the specification: alternating fold direction, panel alignment and graphics crossing the creases. If the concern is physical, request the relevant material or functional sample. If it is print appearance, agree a suitable proof. Confirm the sample scope before approval. Free sample preparation is completed within 15 days; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
How should I state quantities for a quote?
Use folded brochures per layout and language. Separate versions and give a delivery destination and required arrival date. This lets the quote distinguish the production quantity, packing and shipping scope.
