Paper Tube Packaging
Paper tubes form a cylindrical pack with a wound paperboard body and a specified closure.
- Wound paper tube, selected base and fitted removable cap
- Wound paper wall
- Cylindrical item
Start with the intended use, finished size and quantity. The material and construction can follow.
The product in use
A cylindrical paper wall with a fitted base and cap
A paper tube combines a wound cylindrical wall with a base and fitted cap. Internal diameter and usable height describe the contents space, while wall plies and cap engagement define the assembly. The exterior wrap carries decoration without determining the actual cavity by itself.

What makes up the finished product?
- Wound tube wall
- The cylindrical paperboard wall sets usable inside diameter; the wrap and seam affect the exterior print.
- Base and cap
- Specify the fixed base and removable cap, then check closure engagement and access using the actual contents.
- Usable cylinder
- Inside diameter and effective height must fit the product after allowing for the base and cap engagement.
Specifications and materials
Paper Tube Packaging specifications
Use these reference options to build the project brief. Dimensions are design examples; material availability, tooling and production timing depend on the confirmed specification.
| Parameter | Reference or option | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Finished dimensions | 80 mm internal diameter × 150 mm usable height | This cylinder example must include closure intrusion when calculating usable space. Design reference, not a factory limit. |
| Tube structure | Wound paper tube, selected base and fitted removable cap | Inside diameter controls contents fit; cap engagement controls opening and retention. |
| Dimension basis | Usable inside diameter and height; outside diameter and height stated separately | The contents must fit the usable cylindrical cavity, allowing for the base and cap engagement. |
| Contents and insert | Actual item dimensions and mass; cavity, divider or retention requirements | Trial insertion and removal using the real contents before approving the structure. |
| Material construction | Wound paperboard wall with separately specified exterior wrap, base and cap | Compare the actual grade and construction. Fit the actual contents in an assembled tube and check removal. |
| Format and order unit | complete packs per structure, size and artwork version | List components and versions separately so quantities refer to the same finished unit. |
| Finishing choice | A wrapped tube needs seam-aware artwork; it is not automatically food-contact compliant. | Approve the proposed material and process combination on an appropriate sample. |

Choose the surface and construction for the way the finished product will be used. The options below are selection references, not a guaranteed inventory list.
Wound paper wall
Paper plies wound into the specified tube diameter
Wall construction determines stiffness, while seams and the closure reduce practical clearance.
Sample check: Fit the actual contents in an assembled tube and check removal.
Exterior wrap and caps
Printed wrap with separately specified top and base
The wrap carries decoration; cap engagement and base attachment determine opening and retention.
Sample check: Inspect the cap fit and filled base rather than approving the artwork alone.
Selected sample focus — Wound paper wall: Fit the actual contents in an assembled tube and check removal.
Format & usable space
Tube Inside Diameter, Usable Height & Cap Engagement

Surface finish options
Exterior printed panels or wrap
Discuss film, selective gloss and metallic accents on the exterior. Keep glue areas clear and avoid hinges, seams and creases unless tested. For relief, confirm the wrap or board construction, reverse-side effect and tooling separately.

Details that change the finished product
Inspect the structure, wrap and contents fit
Measure the cavity and cap engagement
State inside diameter and usable height separately from overall dimensions. Review roundness, seam placement and closure access with the actual product.
Tube structure
Inside diameter controls contents fit; cap engagement controls opening and retention. A structural sample checks fit, opening, erection and the insert with the actual contents.
Surface and finishing compatibility
A wrapped tube needs seam-aware artwork; it is not automatically food-contact compliant. Wall construction determines stiffness, while seams and the closure reduce practical clearance. Fit the actual contents in an assembled tube and check removal.
Cylindrical Product Packs & Gift Tubes
Cylindrical item
Match the usable inside diameter and height to the contents.
Gift tube
Review cap engagement and the removal sequence with any inner restraint included.
Solve the risk before production
Check Seam Clearance, Cap Fit & Product Removal
The critical finished-product check
A cylindrical product can fit the nominal diameter yet jam at a seam or closure. Trial a fully assembled tube and add an appropriate removal method if needed.
The base moves under filled weight
Why it happens: Cap appearance is approved without testing the base attachment and contents.
Fix and check: Trial the filled tube and its base attachment; use a separate transit pack where needed.
When to choose another format
Paper Tubes, Rectangular Rigid Boxes & Cartons
| Alternative | Use and trade-off |
|---|---|
| Rigid Box Printing | A rectangular shell better suits multiple components and a partitioned insert. |
| Folding Carton Printing | A folding carton stores flat and presents a different cavity and loading method. |
Sample and approval
Check the Fully Assembled Tube & Closure
Free samples are available, with preparation completed within 15 days. Confirm the sample scope; courier arrangements and transit time are separate.
Structural sample
Checks dimensions, fit and assembly using unprinted or representative materials. It does not establish final color.
Printed proof
Checks text, image reproduction and artwork on the agreed proof medium. It may not reproduce final assembly or every finish.
Complete finished sample
A structural sample checks fit, opening, erection and the insert with the actual contents.
From brief to delivery
Order Details for Paper Tube Packaging
Build and approve the order in five steps
Send the project brief
Send contents diameter, height, weight, closure and any direct-contact requirement. Include finished dimensions, quantity by version, destination and required arrival date. If a configuration is undecided, describe the intended use.
Compare the quoted configuration
Compare the same quantity basis: complete packs per structure, size and artwork version. Check that the quote identifies materials, finishing, included components, sample scope, packing and freight.
Approve the appropriate sample
A structural sample checks fit, opening, erection and the insert with the actual contents. A print proof checks artwork and color; a complete finished sample also checks assembly. Record what the selected sample does and does not reproduce.
Confirm files and release production
Approve the final artwork revision and the tube structure specification. Record the agreed quantity, payment conditions, packing and production schedule in the order.
Confirm packing and dispatch
State flat or erected delivery, inserts per box, protection between finished surfaces and carton counts. Confirm production completion and transit as separate dates, using the delivery destination and required arrival date.
- Use the approved vector dieline at 1:1 scale, with cut, crease and glue areas on separate named layers. Mark inside and outside dimensions explicitly.
- Extend edge-to-edge trim artwork by 3 mm unless the approved template specifies a different bleed. Use approximately 300 effective ppi for continuous-tone images at their placed size; keep fine linework as vectors where possible.
Project questions
Planning Paper Tube Packaging
Why are both inside and outside dimensions needed?
Inside diameter and usable height establish whether the contents fit. Outside dimensions determine display, shipping and secondary packing. Wall thickness and cap construction mean the two cannot be treated as interchangeable.
How should I specify quantities and versions?
Count complete packs per structure, size and artwork version. State contents diameter, height, weight, closure and any direct-contact requirement; components, language versions and different structures must be listed separately.
What determines the minimum quantity and delivery schedule?
The selected stock, construction, finishing, version count and sample scope determine production planning. Request quantity breaks for the same configuration and an arrival-date plan that separates sampling, manufacturing and transit. No minimum or lead time is implied by the design examples above.
Specify the finished product.
Send contents diameter, height, weight, closure and any direct-contact requirement. Include finished dimensions, quantity by version, destination and required arrival date.
